How To Play Solitaire

Different Types of the Popular Card Game Solitaire

The game of solitaire is one of the favorite past times of people throughout the world. This is because you do not need another player to be able to play the game. You can spend a lazy afternoon just playing the game and it is actually enjoyable even if it is an old type of card game. If you have not learned this type of card game yet, then the following will give you a quick over view with the different types of Solitaire card game.

The main goal of the game is to be able arrange the cards in play in a certain manner. The variation of the game would then come from the arrangement of the cards and the playing process. The following is a short list of solitaire card games.

  • Klondike Solitaire – This involves a 52-card deck and with 4 foundations and 7 columns of increasing number of downturned cards. Each of the end-card of the column is upturned and so is the first column. With this rule, the first column should only contain 1 upturned card and the last column will have 6 downturned cards with one upturned card on top. The drawing of the cards from the remainder of deck is by threes. The arrangement in the columns is alternating colors and decreasing number. The 4 foundations areas will contain each of the suites starting with an ace and ending with a king. After all the cards are arranged here, the game is completed.
  • Spider Solitaire – Instead of just 7 columns, this card game will have 10. 54 cards will be dealt in the columns with the top card revealed. This will require 2 card decks and the arrangement to be done with the revealed cards placed on the columns is decreasing and same suits. The remaining 50 cards from the deck will again be dealt on top of each of the 10 columns, given that there are no columns empty. The game ends once all the columns are arranged.

  • Pyramid Solitaire – The goal of this game is again to remove all the cards from the pyramid and into the foundation. Pair of cards may be removed from the stack if they have a sum of 13. In this game, an ace will have a value of 1, jack with 11, queen with 12 and a king with 13. Thus, a king can be removed from the stack immediately and moved to the foundation. Only cards on top of the pile may be moved. A card is drawn from the remainder of the deck and can be paired with any of the top cards from the pyramid. The pyramid will have one revealed card in the top, which is also the bottom of the pile, and 7 revealed cards as the base, which is the top cards of the pyramid pile. There will be no re-dealing of cards from the deck and the game may be declared complete even if there are remaining cards in the deck.
