How To Play Solitaire

What is the Solitaire Card Game?

Solitaire is one of the most common card games played by a single player. Although the root origin of the card game is still unclear until today, it was first seen in France in the beginning of the 19th century and later spread throughout England and America. Another name for this card game is Patience. The game will involve the use of a card deck without the jokers and the aim of the game is to sort out the cards from the deck in some manner.

Today, the game solitaire particularly refers to the Klondike solitaire card game. With the deck usually on the upper left hand of the table, one card is dealt showing its suite and number below the deck followed by 6 other downturned cards from left to right. On top of the second column of card, which is the first downturned card column, a new upturned card will be placed from the deck and 5 other downturned cards are again placed on top of the remaining columns of downturned cards on the right. The process is repeated until all the card columns will have one upturned card with the last column containing 6 downturned cards and one upturned card on top. Cards are to be arranged in alternating colors and decreasing number in the seven columns. There will be four assigned places at the top right of the playing area assigned to different suites. This will start with an ace, which is the lowest card in this game, and will end with a king. Completing all the suites in the assigned area will finish the game.

Each start of the turn, the player will have to draw three cards from the remaining ones in the deck and see if the top card can be moved to any of the seven columns or the four assigned places. Cards to be placed on the four assigned areas may only come from the top upturned cards of the seven columns or the top card of the three-card draw from the deck. You may move any of the upturned cards from one column to another as long as it follows the rule of alternating colors and lesser number. If a downturned card becomes the top of column, the player will upturn it. If there is a vacant column, the player may move a king from any of the top upturned cards together with the other cards on top of it to this column. The turn will end after these are all done. If all the cards in the deck have been drawn and upturned but not moved, the player will downturn all these cards maintaining the original order and continue the process of drawing and sorting cards. The game will only end if there are no more cards to be moved after a cycle because all the card are move to the four assigned areas and winning the game or the cards are in a “deadlock”.
